Who is your current employer and what do they do?
Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield. We are a small animal, multi-discipline referral hospital.
What is your job title and what does the job entail?
I’m an RVN in the Internal Medicine team. My team assist with imaging (ultrasound, x-ray, MRI & CT), endoscopy and cardiology cases. We also assist with any other internal medicine cases that are referred to us. These cases can either be acute onset or chronic cases that are managed by our medics.
How did you achieve your current position?
I started at Paragon whilst a Student Veterinary Nurse and then qualified as an RVN five months later. Our hospital was newly opened when I first started and the nursing team was split into surgical, medical and ward teams in March this year. I applied for the internal medicine team, as this is where my interest and passion lies, in March 2019.
What do you enjoy about your job
I enjoy the variety of cases we see and having the facilities available to help as many patients as we can. I also enjoy working with a great team of people who are all working to deliver the highest level of care to each and every patient.
What are the challenging aspects about your job?
Internal medicine is very challenging, and each patient responds to treatment in a different way and it can sometimes be frustrating when despite our best efforts, patients do not recover.
What are your plans for the future?
I am hoping to complete my VTS in Internal Medicine within the next few years and continue to learn as much as I can about medicine.
What other qualifications do you hold?
None at the moment
What key piece of advice would you give to anyone wishing to follow a similar career path?
Go for it – I moved from first opinion to referral nursing and so have a lot of my colleagues. It’s a steep learning curve but it has made me a better nurse by taking that step!
